King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Omnium Gatherum
This latest release from the prolific Australian rockers King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard is titled Omnium Gatherum. It is an extended full-length that takes on many genres of music including psychedelic rock, synthrock, hip-hop, and thrash stoner metal. Omnium Gatherum is the 20th album from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.
The band began forming in 2010 and the first album was 12 Bar Bruise in 2012. They sent their demos out to labels but did not find a fit. They resolved to create the record label Flightless managed and founded by Eric Moore who was the second drummer and founding member of the band. Flightless has allowed the band to freely explore their creativity releasing a wide range of music from heavy metal, folk, blues, synth pop, psychedelic rock, microtonal music, progressive rock and more.
Omnium Gatherum follows the major key synth pop album Butterfly 3000 which has uplifting songs with clever use of poly-rhythms, sequencing and harmonized vocals. Prior to Butterfly 3000s catchy electro rock was the two part series K.G and L.W. These were microtonal albums with fast riffs, progressive rock rhythms showing off the incredible drumming of Michael Cavanagh. The album that brought them to global attention was their thrash metal album Infest The Rats Nest that was packed with doom and stoner rock.
Omnium Gatherum is 16 tracks running 90 minutes with the transcendent opener ‘The Dripping Tap’ clocking in 18 minutes. ‘The Dripping Tap’ was the first single from the album and has gained fan support in a big way. The song starts with a retro vocal the bursts into fast single note runs with 2-3 guitars harmonizing and rocking with fast drumming, tambourine and precision bass playing. The music builds-up with the distorted guitars in your face with wah-wah tone sweeps, treble forward soaring high notes. The song has a driving rhythm that repeats and shifts with the guitars freely soloing with incredible energy. The music builds to a high roaring blaze and breaks through to a higher level. The blissful vocals of Ambrose return with rhythm guitars. The Dripping Tap slows down to a silent halt before blasting back into the fast and brilliant psychedelic rock explosion.
This album is very much a dripping tap as it keeps coming. The music is constant relentless the Gizz Wizz has endless creative ability and we are powerless to stop it. The music jumps from genre to genre like a conglomerate forced together in molten magma. ‘Sadie Sorceress’ and ‘The Grim Reaper’ moves into hip hop; a new style for the Lizard Wizard’s. The use organs, deep bass lines, rapped vocals, and a catchy chorus with flutes and world music section. ‘Gaia’ and ‘Predator X’ spike the volume with thrashing eco metal that is stoney. There is a great video of ‘Gaia’ from Cochella 2022. The album flexes into pop, funk, R&B, progressive rock, folk, and synth pop.
