King Buffalo Dead Star

King Buffalo Dead Star

9 / 10

King Buffalo Dead Star is an epic journey with excellently crafted stoner, prog-rock, and heavy psychedelic space rock. Dead Star brings a brand of stoner rock that other bands cannot deliver. The progressive synth sound-tracking and compositional development propelled this album to a higher level. This is likely to make the best of 2020 list!

King Buffalo Dead Star was self-released by King Buffalo on March 20th 2020.

In the early stages of Dead Star, we made the decision to make a strong commitment to experimentation,” explains guitarist/vocalist Sean McVay. “From exploring different time signatures, tunings and textures, to tweaking the song writing processes themselves. We’re extremely proud of these recordings, and feel it’s some of our most ambitious work yet.”Sean McVay

King Buffalo resides in Rochester, New York on the east coast of the USA. They formed in 2013 after leaving Velvet Elvis and released their first album Orion in 2016. Dead Star is the 4th studio album from King Buffalo.

King Buffalo take their music to a new level on Dead Star and I would not be surprised if this ends up being their definitive album.

The prog-rock elements of the music are the other worldly synths and the ability to create dynamic music which evolves and grows throughout the plot of the song.

This genre is filled with great creative musicians who can perform with passion but King Buffalo brings a depth of musical composition to the table that allows the songs to gather deeper interest and keep the melodies fresh.

The vocals and lyrics by Sean McVay are well done and seem to capture the familiar tropes for the stoner rock genre. The vocals come through cleanly and intelligibly a clean sound considering their stoner contemporaries. I personally feel the vocal performance is awesome and gives the music a unique edge.

Sean McVay is vocalist guitarist; Dan Reynolds on bass and drummer Scott Donaldson formed the band in 2013. Dead Star is the follow-up to Longing To Be The Mountain.
