The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol (TBWNIAS) – Berserkir Volume II

8.6 / 10 Twisted Hyperspace Krautrock

The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol (TBWNIAS) – Berserkir Volume II was released on October 30th 2020 on Cardinal Fuzz (UK) and Feeding Tube Records (USA) on Galaxy Mustard vinyl with a 2A insert and now being reissued on Purple Galaxy for Europe and UK. I picked up a copy of the Galaxy Mustard and it sounds incredible.

The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol (TBWNIAS) – Berserkir Volume II is a psychedelic free form space rock krautrock jam session with non-stop intrigue and brilliant improvisations. TBWNIAS has released over 25 albums and has developed a sixth sense for making music that is innovative experimental and psychedelic rock. Berserkir Volume II is one of my favorites from the band and it shows off all their best assets.

The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol (TBWNIAS) – Berserkir Volume II is the second installment from an extended improvised recording session. Berserkir Volume I came out in March 2020 and was a different flavor from the same cooks. The band is written about as a collective but for this recording they had 6 members. Guitars, drums, saxophone, synth, bass all come together to make rich captivating compositions.

The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol (TBWNIAS) – Berserkir Volume II is great from beginning to end. This album focuses more on the rocking weirdness but still makes space for some mellow experimental meanderings.

The drums take the driver seat leading the band through the unknown creative landscapes as the music is all improvised. The drums are punchy and deep setting the pace and determining the heavy from the mellow sections. The bass is very present in the mix bumping in kraut rock grooves and playing off the drums and guitars.

The guitar players use fuzz, wah, echo reverb, vibrato to make interesting sounds and to rock the fuck out. The two guitarists play off each other with seamless instinct and are a highlight in the sound. The guitar solos play over and sit with-in the arrangement bringing the sound to psych rock heaven. The guitars also get very experimental exploring effects and sustained washes.

Other instruments enter and leave the mix like synth and saxophone. The saxophone manages to stay with-in the mix as well and doesn’t step out blasting its horn but sits back and adds body to the composition and makes some parts trippy.

The fact that the album is completely improvised is very impressive this group of musicians work together in rare fashion. The level of comfort to create songs that are so dynamic and interesting without any plan is rare. Their years of experience and pile of albums lifts TBWNIAS into the upper echelon of psychedelic kraut rockers and Improvised space and psych rock music.
