Alex Maas Levitation Sessions

Alex Maas Levitation Sessions is a live recording of Alex Maas playing haunting folk songs with vintage tones and psychedelic atmospheres. Alex Maas is best known for his role as singer and instrumentalist in the Austin based psychedelic rock band The Black Angels. His voice is at peak performance on this album and the performances are near flawless. The production, mix and musicianship is studio quality and sounds stunning. the music is moody, somber and attention grabbing. The swirling mellotron, quality guitar lines and tones combine with thoughtful percussion and strong songwriting.

Alex Maas Levitation Sessions is my favorite release yet from Alex Maas’s solo career the album has songs from his recent album Luca and includes several new songs as well. The video for the session appears to have Jake Garcia on guitar or bass another talented member for the near legendary Black Angels. The band is tight the harmonies are spot on, the music is sad, hopeful, and beautiful.

Alex Maas Levitation Sessions sounds amazing the songs are about family, politics, and overcoming challenges. Maas is known for his cutting lyrics and story telling stye and it is in full effect on this album. The music is hypnotic psychedelic folk. The sound is modern and unique in the folk or psych scenes. Alex Maas has a emotive and special skill for songwriting. The diversity of instrumentation on the various songs is continuously interesting. The tones and effects are swirling creating droning textures with raw exposed guitars and reverb drenched vocals. The mellotron and organs give the music a deep vintage vibe and add psychedelic auditory sensations.

Alex Maas Levitation Sessions is an awesome album and will appeal to fans of psych folk and The Black Angels but I believe that many of these songs have the ability to reach a much wider audience especially ‘Shines Like The Sun’. The vocal lines combined with the effects and instrumentation is a wonder to behold and will bring me back to this album again and again. It has a classic feel that feels so right.
