Osees Rotate Panther

Osees Rotate Panther is such a cool album. The music is spaced out, weird, and lysergic. Osees continues to challenge themselves creatively and this album pushes the band into new psyched out spaces. The music is krautrock, kosmische experimental space sounds, with momentary glimpses of garage rock. The music is psychedelic with wild landscapes of sound that melt, multiply, and fall adrift in the kosmos.

Osees Rotate Panther is not a typical album from Osees. It is their first in-house remix. Using material from the Protean Threat recording sessions and remixed by John Dywer, band leader of Osees. At times the original song is distinguishable although it has been tossed into the LSD sonic blender. Other times the songs feel like improvisational outtakes from the recording session. There is a great deal of production happening with new electronic drums, twisted filtered and warped guitars and heavily effected vocals. The overall, impression is twisted weird music that is hifi, cutting edge and is highly innovative.

Several of the tracks are instrumental with synth, drone, beats and the only guitars are transformed beyond recognition. The pandemic gave John Dywer the time to realize this incredible remix album which truly transcends a remix and becomes and album of its own. There are only a few songs which are recognizable from the Protean Threat album and they are altered so significantly that they are more of a new song with samples from the original version.

This album and the 12″ Synth are the only albums that have so much chill music on them. Normally Osees is ripping it up with fast drums and blazing guitars and pushed vocals. Here the sound is reaching toward ambient experimental kraut and kosmische with something unidentifiable in the mix This album is the UFO in the Osees catalogue a strange otherworldly object that looks familiar but is something totally different.

The slower drugged sound has a drag, a slur, a melting hot high that stays chill throughout. ‘Scramble Experiment’ has some very cool guitar leads that get weird and far out. The most recognizable aspects of the Protean Threat sessions are in the vocals and lyrics but there are recognizable baselines and minimalist guitar lines derived from the Protean Threat sessions.

Osees

Osees is the main band for John Dywer and has been known by many names over the years including Thee Oh Sees, Oh Sees, OCS and Osees. John Dywer is also a member of the bands Damage Bug, Bent Arcana, Witch Egg and several more. The band started in San Francisco, California with intense garage rock and punk rock energy. The various name changes that occured over the last decade have indicated changes in the bands line-up. Oh Sees kicked in after they had established 2 drummers and Tim Hellman was sworn in at bass. Then Tomas Dolan entered the band on synth and keys and the name shifted to Osees.

Osees has released over 20 albums through out their career and they have continued to evolve their sound never back tracking or repeating themselves. They continue to push the envelope and challenge their audience. The albums and the marketing all have the quirks of John Dywer. Rotate Panther 3D edition for example just appeared one day on the Castle Face Records website with no notification. Rumors spread online about the possible release date but the actual release date for the pre order was random unknown to the public. They will do editions that are super limited or only available for pre order for 1 week and who ever bough one will get one. Most recently they did the pre order for the Levitation live sessions vinyl edition and had three different colored vinyl and each color would send the profits to a different music venue. Its pretty cool, hard to follow but a real fun game for those of us who manage to collect them all! ; )

John Dywer is a business guy as he runs Castle Face Records which releases nearly all of the Osees albums from his projects. I have speculated that these changes in name make it easy to keep the accounting straight for royalties but that speculation has no real info to back its claim. Owning the label allowed John Dywer to have a studio in his home and to have creative control over what music gets released and the how and when of the whole process. This has allowed him to continue working during the pandemic of 2020 and release a lot of new music.

Osees various albums have been come very hyped. The limited edition versions of the album will sell out in minutes and now there is a strong value to the limited edition versions of these albums. Rotate Panther 3D promises to be another sought after collectors item.
