Anunnaki Martyr Of Alexandria

Anunnaki Martyr Of Alexandria is a new album with brutal distortion, droning stoned out doom, heavy drumming and tension filled dark ambiance with modular synth and kosmische stylings. The music is intended to evoke the ancient pagan philosopher, astronomer and Mathematician known as Hypatia. She lived in the 5th century in Alexandria a city known for its wisdom in ancient sciences and former home to the legendary library of Alexandria which was burned by Julius Ceaser in 48 C.E. Anunnaki Martyr Of Alexandria creates a sonic interpretation of the life of Hypatia with 30 minutes of music that is mind warping. The album is dynamic and unique starting with heavy doom stoner rock, burning out into stretches of drone kosmische and back into pummeling noise effects and slamming heavy drumming.

Anunnaki Martyr Of Alexandria is another revelation from one of the most interesting Psych-Doom bands on Earth. Their music is inspired by stories and themes of the ancient world leading to song titles and album names that often will require research to understand the deeper meaning. Every songs seems to have a purpose and meaning behind it which add a lot of depth and interest to the music. These background stories help set the mental stage for a new interpretation of their music and can send shivers up the spine.

Anunnaki is from Nanaimo, Canada and features Dave Read (Moths & Locusts) on guitar, bass and effects and Arlen Thompson (Wolf Parade) on drums, samples and modular synth. Anunnaki released their first CD-R in 2016. Their first album out on their own label NoiseAgonyMayhem was titled Two Treasies on Gnostic Thought followed by Immanentize The Eschaton. Their heavy themes, pummeling screaming wah, visceral distortion, punchy drums and out-of-this-world synth create sonic textures that are compelling with uncanny depth. These sonic meditations are a maelstrom od sound that will thrill edgy and experiential music lovers.

Martyr Of Alexandria’s songs Golden Gate Of The Sun, Cyril, The Fanatic and The Cries Of Hypatia tell the story of a Hellenistic Neo-platonic philosopher, woman and mathematician who was a teacher and became influential in politics. She advised Orestes a so-called Perfect of Roam who was in conflict with Cyril the Bishop of Alexandria part of the Catholic Church. Rumors spread that it was Hypatia that was influencing the Roman politician Orestes to stay in dis-chord with the Bishop Cyril. These rumors led to superstition, accusations and was murdered by a mob of Christians in March 415 C.E.

Anunnaki Martyr Of Alexandria has depth, in meaning and the bass truly rumbles. The spaced out kosmiche synth sounds are epic and the heavy doom rock is very heavy. The combination of hard and soft works great together. The more ambient sections of the album are not spa music. These sections are eerie, mysterious, packed with tension and wrapped sounds. The experience of this album with eyes closed headphones on can be transcendent, and a bit overwhelming. That said, if this music is combined with psychedelic or cannabis you are going to be blown way out of your depth like adding another drug to the mix you will be transported outta your body.

The music reaches into the past and into the ether. The sounds feel like they penetrate space time like the weird device in the movie contact. Few bands can take the listener on a journey like Annunaki and the journey is always intense and unexpectedly wild. This is what has made them one of my favorite doom bands, so definitely don’t pass on Anunnaki.
