Holy Monitor -Southern Lights is a compelling blend of psych garage, world music and indie music. The band is from Athens, Greece and they have created and excellent album. The vocals are heavily effected and sing catchy melodies. The guitars are forward and psychedelic rock or vintage jangle. They have blasting organs to add to the vintage vibe.
Southern Lights is an energized release that has the best music from the Holy Monitors. Their rock sound is both familiar and uniquely expressive. They barrow from classic rock, indie psych and psych rock to create a moving special brew. The vocal processing is unique and often emphasized by the guitar or keys.
Holy Monitor based in Athens, Greece and Southern Lights is the 5th or 6th album from the band. This newest effort is the most pop friendly album departing from their krautrock and space rock ambitions of the previous efforts. those sounds are still present but integrated into a more popular sound. I feel that they have added in a stronger world music sound to glue together their various inspirations.
This album will likely appeal to fans of Atlin Gün, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala.
