The Cult of Lip Sleep Receiver EP is the latest cassette from the Minneapolis, Minnesota USA based band. Spearheaded by Ronnie Lee (Guitar and Vocals) and Hannah Porter (Bass and Vocals) with Eric Whalen on drums. The Cult Of Lip is known for cutting edge rock and underground experimental sounds. This band has created something truly unique with their calculated cacophony of dreamy noise that will have the most informed gear heads on the edge of their seat.

Sleep Receiver is their second release with Rare Plant Tapes in Madison, WI released in October of 2018,. The previous releases were a cyclone of swirling effects and echoing vocals colliding together. With Sleep Receiver the drive toward experimentation and slamming rock sounds is neatly blended with clearly defined tones and shoegaze psychedelia. The compositions have found more structure allowing the instruments to shine and each section to fill with unexpected sounds which are a treat to feast upon.

The Cult Of Lip

The guitar played by Ronnie Lee is running in stereo with unique effects chains coming through each set of speakers. The diversity in tones and effects on the guitar is impressive and meticulously crafted. The playing is wild, edgy and filled with My Bloody Valentine style Vibrato guitar layered in fuzz tones. In “Walking” the music comes in pulsating waves with pitch shifting vibrations that will make your head rock.

The bass guitar is just as definitive as the guitars with a continuously distorted low end thump and a dreamscape of effects. The melody of the songs often falls on the bass and the blanket of echoing vocals shared between Hannah Porter and Ronnie Lee. The dual vocals come through in effect laden style churning up sounds from the psychedelic underground. “Dream” has the clearest vocals of any song yet released by The Cult Of LipRonnie Lee comes through in the verses with confidence behind a smoke screen of reverb and Hannah’s spacious airy voice creates a wave of intrigue behind the hard-hitting bass and guitars.

The Cult Of Lip

The Cult Of Lip are insanely talented and creative songwriters. Although they have some clear influences from the shoegaze and psychedelic rock scenes they are creating something unique that is instantly recognizable as The Cult Of Lip. The sound design on each section of each song shows an obsessive journey of tonal discovery that has becoming a defining feature of their music. Sleep Receiver is a big step forward for this exciting band. Their sound is becoming more focused and defined making way for songs with broader appeal to their underground audience.
