Modern Stars Silver Needles is a fuzzy psychedelic rock album with shoegaze, pop, and psychedelic 60s sounds. The album is groove oriented with droning background arrangements, fuzz and filtered guitar lines, brooding male vocals and Soprano female backing.
Modern Stars Silver Needles would appeal to fans of The Black Angels, Wall Of Death (first album), Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, Loop, Primal Scream and Suicide.
Modern Stars are an Italian three piece band. The album has many instruments from tampura, sitar, synth, guitar, bass, and drums. Silver Needles is the debut album from Modern Stars. Andrea Merolle, Barbara Margani and Andrea Sperduti were members of several musical projects in the underground rock scene in Latium, Italy.
Modern Stars Silver Needles is a very enjoyable set of songs the mix of psychedelic rock fuzz guitar and layers of sustained reverberation of each of the instruments hanging in the backgrounds draws in their shoegaze element. The selection of world instrumentation lightens the mood of the album adding a psychedelic 60’s character to the album.
While section are fuzzed out and driving much of the album has a laid back feel and a few songs slow down into blissful mellow tones. This create a dynamic in the arc of the album and creates well balanced variety. The drone element is strong on this album with those echoing reverberating and sustained tones dwelling in the atmosphere through out the album. It creates a breathing background that the instruments and vocals melt into for wall of sound harmonics.
Modern Stars has a broding baritone male voice drenched in reverb as the fronting vocal with Soprano female backing vocals. The play between the two brings a new air and energy to the sound that lightens the darker tendancies. In the more instrumetnal sections the soprano vocals add greatly to the atmosphere and feel of the songs.
