The Chemistry Set ‘Paint Me A Dream’ single is an incredible album from this established underground psych rock band. The music is driven with psychedelic rock guitars and 90s alternative rock vocals. The layer harmonies are inspired by vintage music like H.P Lovecraft with a distinctive 90s sound.
The Chemistry Set ‘Paint Me A Dream’ has lyrics about time and space and a themes about visionary travels and mystics. They are a very psychedelic band that does an authentic integration of late 80 and 90s underground sounds with 60s summer of love appeal. The lead guitars are a highlight with hot blazing tones and confident execution. The songs become more experimental as it processes and finishes with a wild display of edgy guitar.
The Chemistry Set’s new single B-side is a cover from Mark Fry ‘The Witch”. The Chemistry Set has developed a reputation for making psyched out covers of 60s and 70s psychedelic gems. ‘The Witch’ is a powerful example of how great this band is at interpreting songs. The cover starts staying close to the original with an acid folk sound based on acoustic guitars and vocal arrangements. Once they go beyond the vocal lines the track goes off the rails and gets way far-out with early Pink Floyd like experimentation, heavier riffage and psychedelic sounds. I am a big fan of Mark Fry and this cover is as good if not better then the original, keep in mind The Chemistry Set goes way far off what Italian fine artist Mark Fry created. Interestingly, Mark Fry refuses to acknowledge his early music as he now is a fine art painter but he is happy to accept the royalties.
The Chemistry Set is split between London and Barcelona and released their first album in 1987. They are known as underground pioneers of the the UK neo-psychedelic rock scene from the 90s. This single in one of the first releases since their extended hiatus. We are all happy to have them back in the game!
