Moths And Locusts Exoplanets 8.8 / 10 New Ecstatic Electro-Psych Rock

Moths And Locusts Exoplanets

8.8 / 10 Extraterrestrial Electro-Psychedelic Rock

Moths And Locusts Exoplanets hit the shelves on October 30th 2020 via The Weird Beard and NoiseAgonyMayhem.

Moths And Locusts Exoplanets is a space rock blast off with kosmische, doom, stoner rock, and psychedelic rock colliding in a cathartic reverie. Exoplanets is highly creative making their own niche in the psychedelic rock scene. This is my favorite moths and Locusts album to date because it brings together all their diverse musical experience into a cohesive whole. They continue to challenge assumptions and have created an album that pushes the envelope.

The instruments are encased in effects along side modular synthesizers, vocal harmonies and crushing climatic peaks. The music is electronic, raw space rock, experimental psychedelic rock that avoids definition. One thing that is certain is the music rocks hard in a pool of awesome weirdness.

Moths And Locusts is a sextet from Nanaimo, British Columbia has been releasing great music since 2013 on NoiseAgonyMayhem. They range from experimental space rock to straight up psychedelic rock. Exoplanets marks 10 years of music creation for Moths and Locusts. They have collaborated with Damo Suzuki of legendary krautrock band CAN along with other collaborations. They have become an important part of the Canadian psychedelic and ambient rock scene with members playing in several other projects including Anunnaki, El Hombre Al Aqua, an many more.

Moths And Locusts Exoplanets centers on the 16 minute opus ‘exoplanets’ which opens with a flute calmly sailing over ambient soundscapes. The vocals enter with soothing harmonies that have a synthesized space effect. A electric sitar enters the mix as the track slowly builds the arrangement. guitars bass and drum enter the equation along with the other instruments showing off the soundscapes that can be produced by a six member band. The bass thumps with doom styled distortion all while keeping the sound low in volume and slowly building to a cathartic release. The sound merges directly into the final track “fresh Red Blood” which is a deep space kosmische track highlighting the modular synthesizers ability to make ambience with tension and alien tones.

The vocals are backed in group sing style that gives those tracks an extra dose of energy. The driven rock music is as much raw stoner as it is space rock sci-fi. The modular synths sound incredible on this album and is ever present. They have flutes, deep echos, bass, synth, drums, guitars, vocals all layered up. The various instruments have their own space in the mix but come together beautifully.

This album has a distinct psychedelic vibe, not the kind from 1960 but from 2100. They create a sound that is futuristic with forward snyth and bass that taps into an electronic music sound. That is mixed with krautrock and psychedelic rock guitars that rip into the cosmos with moments of heavy stoner rock. This is the true future of punk so get on your hovercraft put on your space helmet and take ride into the future.

The mix and master on the album sounds fantastic and for me this is the best Moths & Locust release thus far. I feel like the band is moving into a new phase of their songwriting. They have explored many different sub genres in their previous albums and experimentation has become a defining style for the band. This album see those experiments continue into new territory while bringing together their various interests. The variety, dynamic and power of Exoplanets is impressive.

Moths And Locusts Exoplanets is an interesting album that will delight the ears of those looking for strange new space age rock. The production is dense and boarders on dance music in select moments. Other times the music is experimental, noise rock, doom laden or otherworldly.
