Shem No Songs, Just Sound

Shem No Songs, Just Sound

7.5 / 10

Shem No Songs, Just Sound is kraut rock / space rock with long form tracks composed in improvisational live sessions.

Shem No Songs, Just Sound was released on Clostridium Records and Underground Äxpärten June 12 2020.

Shem is from Stuttgart, Germany their first debut album The Hill AC was self- released in July of 2018 followed by Live at Nachtsicht Festival 2018 another self-release from January 2019.

The latest album No Songs, Just Sound is the first release on a label on physical media. It is a compilation of tracks from the previous two releases with a full remaster and repackaged product for their highest quality release to date.

The sounds on No Songs, Just Sound build slowly gaining distortion and complexity as the tracks progressively extend into time. Despite the music coming from studio and live sessions the sound is consistent and always inspired.

My favorite elements of Shem‘s sound is the commitment to down tempo kosmiche and driven dual guitar space rock. The softer moments where the guitars and synth create quite astral atmopsheres in “finstère”, “Konvoi”, and “Enis”.

Shem uses an old school krautrock approach combining the guitars, synth and a steady bass and drum. The songs are 10 to 20 minutes each and feel freely improvised. The music flows together and the band member use telepathy to shift gears as the songs develop and progressively changes key.

Shem No Songs, Just Sound

Shem is a collective of musicians aiming to create improvisational sound pieces influenced by a wide range of eras and strains of Psychedelic music: From early Krautrock bands such as Amon Düül, Can and Popol Vuh, to the oscellation driven space rock of Hawkwind and the meandering soundscapes created by contemporary bands such as Electric Orange, Oresund Space Collective and Kungens Män. Through combining elements of Ambient, Drone, Psych and Space Rock into epic, reverb drenched jams, Shem take the listener onto a cosmic journey into their own realm of musical experimentation.”
