Moths & Locust Helios Rising

8 / 10

Moths & Locust Helios Rising is a great album filled with treats in the form of spacey psychedelia. Electric guitars backed by a motorik beat sizzle and echo across the tracks.

The album moves from distorted psych to spaced shoegaze diving into deep vibes. The music is mostly instrumental with effected vocals that echo into the far distance spicing it up with melodies. Overall, excellent dynamic album with ripping highs and artful sections with softer tones displaying the reverb and effects.

Moths & Locust Helios Rising was released on Cardinal Fuzz Records and Noise Agony Mayhem Records on May 22nd 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Moths & Locust Helios Rising is a first time vinyl press of a classic album released originally in 2016 on Noise Agony Mayhem Records and Sunmask. The new issue has new cover art by Brett Savage and a new master for vinyl press. Helios Rising is a great album and should have been vinyl in the first place.

Moths & Locust features Angus Barter and Mike Breen on guitars; Dave Read on bass and Dave Bean on drums. From Vancouver Island described as

As the nucleus of an intimate, richly collaborative arts community, the independent music scene in Nanaimo, BC.” The bands music is very instinctual with a clear focus on a free collective sound.

Helios Rising is not all improvisational glory but features wonderful melodies especially in “Invisible Light” where the bass and vocals create a rich popular sound in the vein of Jesus and The Mary Chain.

Moths & Locust Helios Rising is for fans of Hawkwind, Acid Mothers Temple, Weeed, SLIFT, krautrock, Spacemen 3, Space Rock.
