Mainliner Dual Myths is the follow-up to the 2013 album ‘Revelation Space’ and features Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple, Koji Shimura former member of AMT, White Heaven and more, as well as Kawabe Taigen of Bo Ningen. This underground all-star freak-out rocker line-up broken new ground and changed the psychedelic noise rock scene in Japan since 1996. Dual Myths is one of the best albums out there for those who revel in this obscure and artistically expressive genre.
Mainliner Dual Myths is one of their most accessible albums to date (LOL) but it is noisey, freaky, heavy, and fast. The mind boggling guitars and deep space echo vocals are dark and wild. The music pushes the speakers to their limit and sounds amazing on a high quality systems and falls apart on shitty computer speakers. Those little computer speakers did not know what hit them so they cry and fuzz out into a buzzing stupor.
In true Heavy psych style they get dirty and fast. Blazing riffs come non-stop like a starship at warp speed. Clocking in at 20 minutes, each song consumes a side of the 2LP. Mainliner is far from out-of-style. They helped define the heavy psychedelic experimental sound and continue to set the standard today with Dual Myths.
Mainliner Dual Myths is so great and will appeal to fans of fast heavy psychedelic rock, noise rock and experimental rock. It will also appeal to anyone who likes that black leather, dark sunglasses at night psychedelic underground rock sound. The album is incredible and easily rises to the level of the best releases from Acid Mothers Temple. Let me be clear this band while having members of Acid Mothers Temple is a different beast. The guitars are styled differently with a unique tone; the drums are more subdued and precise the bass lines are darker and heavier. The overall goal of the band is all together different pushing for sonic overload but with a mix that makes it all “smooth” on the ears.
Mainliner Dual Myths is years in the making with each band member living on distant continents. They each have many other projects they spearhead each year. Rumors say that Mainliner even scrapped an entire album worth of material before finalizing this masterpiece of psychedelic speed freak rock.
Mainliner Dual Myths is not all over the top freak-out music they take time to chill out and get spacey. The album opens with ‘Blasphemy Hunter’ with echoing vocals and mellow guitar. The songs quickly escalate and until the speakers are ready to burst. The dynamic gives the album a sonic arc that highlights the lows and highs.
The mixing and production is excellent. The music is intense but somehow the mix keeps it in a pleasing range with no sharp high, no dramatic volume boosts and controlled low end that never gets muddy. All the fore-mentioned qualities are difficult to achieve in noisy sonically complex music like that on Dual Myths. This amazing production makes the album very enjoyable and smooth compared to past releases from the band and compared to many other albums in the genre.
Dual Myths my cause ear fatigue after 80 minutes of music but there is not one second that is not well done. Mainliner changed music in the late 90’s and Dual Myths continues their legacy of being one of the most innovative and interesting bands in the scene. The sparsity of recent releases and time they take to finalize the albums makes each release all the more special. Get Dual Myths from Mainliner if you like to burn your toes on the sun and have your mind melted.
