The Kundalini Genie 11:11

7.6 / 10

The Kundalini Genie 11:11 breaks through the veil with shoe-gaze psychedelic rock that is a herald of the newest flush of reverb obsessed psychedelic rockers.

The Kundalini Genie 11:11 was released on 4/10/2020 on Space Ranch Records.

The Kundalini Genie of Glasgow Scotland has been releasing fun psychedelic rock music since 2017 joining the new wave of psychedelic pranksters who really make awesome music. Their album It’s All In Your Head was one of my favorite psychedelic garage rock albums of 2019! see the list here.

The Kundalini Genie has evolved with each album and 11:11 dives into more Shoegaze integrations and a few moodier sections of music. This album has better recording quality and mix than any previous albums making it a joy to listen to on quality stereo electronics. The sound is also less playful and more composed with progressive songs which grow and change before your ears.

11:11 is dynamic with a number of compositions that slowly build with glossy reverberations and disinterested desert psych vocalizations. The cover of the album utilizes the design of sacred tantric spiritual science and the name Kundalini is derived from yogic sciences of India as well. The album does include a sitar in the opening track “Mantra” an other reference to yogic spiritualism.

Mantra” might be my favorite on the album I enjoy the sitar opening and the way the song builds freely with a krautrock infused jam and bleeding good guitar tones.

In contrast “The sky is Falling (But The Stars Look Good On You” Starts very slow and dramatic and the vocals brood forward with a pop music gusto. This track features two vocalists and the voices are beautiful with attitude laced desert rock aesthetic.

A number of tunes on here give me sonic vibes of Brian Jonestown Massacre from classics like “Mary Please” and “Anemone” along with Dandy Warhols and Glasgow legends The Jesus and Mary Chain. But they are no copycats The Kundalini Genie has its own vibe and are also drawing from the cutting edge of underground shoe-gaze, psychedelic rock, and desert rock.
