Bombino Live In Amsterdam has Bombino serving up some of the best guitar playing with an expanded band for this special live performance. Bombino has been called ‘The best guitarist in the world” by some music reviews other say the best in Africa, either way he is a great guitarist. The songs themselves are also a treasure with uplifting melodies and a rock reggae African world music sunshine feel.
The concert occurred at the end of his 2019 world tour and was the last show that rhythm guitarist Illias Mohamed played before his untimely death. This makes the album extra special for Bombino fans who have seen him tour with Illias Mohamed over the last several years.
Bombino Live In Amsterdam captures a perfect live performance by Bombino the music is in the Turagge style and features several traditional songs from the Turag people of Niger. The band shines on stage and takes many detours from the studio versions of the songs. They jam out play new solos extend sing along sections and have several guest musicians joining them on stage for an experience that cannot be found on the excellent studio album.
The back up singers really fill out the vocals and give the music even more charm and energy. To my ears it sounds like sunshine rock rainbows coming through my speakers. The group sing fits the celebratory feel of the album and indeed it was celebration being the last show on a year long world tour that was highly successful. How amazing that he was able to find some addition friends to back him up on such a special night.
Bombino Live In Amsterdam is a great album and will get played over and over on my record player. Is it psychedelic rock not really but will it appeal to psych lovers… well many of them if they are into uplifting music with incredible guitar playing.
A lot has been made of the guitar but the drums and bass are also impeccable. The rhythm mixes African, reggae, and rock rhythms in a totally unique way that is highly impressive and inspired. The band works together on stage a follows the lead of the guitarist singer Bombino. Their communication on stage comes through beautifully on this live recording and I can almost see them smiling at each other as they make this music.
The sounds quality of this live album is nothing short of hi-fi clean clear each instrument has its space in the mix. The tones are dialed in the mix and master is great. This performance was also videotaped so it was a planned live recording and they did a great job on getting top sound.
By the end of the album Bombino and the band are showing off how fast they play while still keeping perfect rhythm. There is a traditional way of playing in Niger where the music at the end speeds up faster and faster until the end of the song.
Bombino Live In Amsterdam is not to be missed make sure to grab a copy before all the vinyl are gone. They will be found at your local records stores or at online distributors or Discogs if those options fall through. I am so happy that I can relive the amazing live performance style of Bombino and that it was captured at such great sound quality. MUST HAVE.
