Kikagaku Moyo Live At Levitation features two live performances side A is live at Austin Psych Fest 2014 and side B is live at Levitation Austin 2019. The history of the the bands plays out before the listener on this amazing LP.
Kikagaku Moyo is a psychedelic rock band with folk sounds, explosive fuzz guitars and sitar. Their hushed vocal style and dynamic music has reached a large international audience.
Kikagaku Moyo Live At Levitation side A is one of their first performances outside of Japan and has the band nervously introducing themselves to the large festival audience in Austin, Texas 2014. For many at the performance with is the introduction to this incredible band. The audience grows louder and more enthusiastic with each song.
The 2014 performance is highly inspired raw and loose. It captures the passionate playing of a band making their first impression on the world stage. They approach the set with an improvisational spirit. The youthful and fresh energy is blazing hot. The guitars and sitar go from meditative folk to out of control fuzz climaxes that rip open the sky. The nervousness the band felt during the performance can be heard in the vocals and in the outstanding playing of the instruments. The 5 performers put everything they had into this performance and they successfully changed hearts and minds to create life-long fans.
Kikagaku Moyo Live At Levitation side B is from 2019, a full five year later and the band has a more refined sound with control and restraint. The music is less improvised, more precise and . The band works together to allow the various instruments to stand out and has a beautifully executed dynamic going from loud to soft. The vocals are clear and confident in their personal hushed style.
Kikagaku Moyo Live At Levitation is a great album! Its a great listen for fans and for newcomers. The music on both sides is incredible in league with the best psych rock in my opinion. In their early days the improvisational live aspect of their band was central. they followed the ideals of the 60s with in the moment jams and creative new sounds.
