Witch Egg was released on January 21st 2021 from Rock is Hell Records in Austria on Limited edition vinyl in a few versions clear red vinyl, White vinyl, and then a few ultra limited editions with variations on the cover art and back vinyl.

Witch Egg

Witch Egg is the latest instrumental side project from John Dwyer and Thomas Dolas of Osees. The music is improvisation krautrock jazz. The driving jazz drumming and saxophone take the fore with John Dwyer adding is subtle fuzz sounds and a little rhythm guitar. Tom Dolan adds in wonderful synth and keys giving this album a sound unlike any other.

Witch Egg is a special album and is not a outtake or deep cut for John Dwyer fans but instead is a great album that stands up in its own right. The music is a balance of rock and jazz and other than a few moments in the beginning the album is laid back with complex subtleties. The band works together as a whole with the sax in the lead laying down layers of intrigue.

Witch Egg has won me over. I usually find jazzy sounds and saxophone to be outside my preferences but somehow it works perfectly on this album. The music boarder on soundtrack but is too interesting to dynamic and weird. It finds its weirdness in soft notes and unusual atmospheres that never get too experimental or too noisey.

The synth and keys are very cool on this album they are focused more on drone, kraut and space rock tones much different then what one might expect from a jazz rock experiment. Even John Dwyer ups the echo and mostly makes his guitar sound like something other then a guitar with drones and weird fuzzy sounds.

Witch Egg is a great album that does not reference Osees in anyway its a new and different beast. The sound is psychedelic in that its easy to imagine breathing and moving landscapes and imaginal optical illusions. Its a chill on your porch in the summer and have a beer or trip out kinda vibe. John Dwyer takes a back seat on this one and lets the other musicians display their unique sense of timing and scale. This is album that I will be playing again and again and you could too, if you can find a copy!
