Quercus Quercus Alkali New Artist Psych Garage Post Punk Joy

Quercus Quercus Alkali

Quercus Quercus Alkali was released on Lower Orbit Records October 26th 2020.

7.8 / 10 Lo-fi Psychedelic Post-Punk

Quercus Quercus Alkali is a psychedelic surf post-punk album with jangling guitars, lo-fi garage rock and feel good vocal harmonies. The music is upbeat with beachy retro guitar riffs, mellow bass and drums that sit back in the mix.

Quercus Quercus is a trio with members located in Oakland California, Salt Lake City, Utah and Lansing, Michigan. The band started in 2017 and Alkali is the debut. They have a DIY approach to music and started their own record label Lower Orbit Records and Alkali is the first album to be release through the label.

Quercus Quercus Alkali is an great collection of songs and the music reminds me of bands like Allah-Las, The Human Expression, and MC5. They blend together psychedelic garage rock and post-punk for a pleasant stroll through a sun bleached urban landscape.

The first single off Alkali was ‘Lundahl’, a song with a vintage vibe wah guitars and strolling bass line. The vocals sound like they are run through a megaphone with a lo-fi dusty vinyl feel. My favorite song on Alkali is ‘High Country’ it has more echo and reverb on the shimming guitars and the vocals are more aggressive and uptempo. The whole album is a great listen!

The album has funky wah guitars, splashy surf reverb and catchy vocals. The sound in vintage inspired with a lo-fi feel. The guitars echo out repeating into space. The vocals are compressed distorted and reverberating. The band has great chilled out energy that feels like a walk on the beach.

The guitar solos get into moments of shoegaze and post rock inspirations with a wall of sound. Most of the lead guitar lines are sassy overdriven tones with lots of reverb. Did I mention the album has a lot of reverb? Just in case I didn’t the album has a lot of reverb.

The songs have inspirations from many genres including vintage psychedelic rock, folk, indie rock, garage rock, surf rock and alternative rock. They blend their influences smoothly and have a great sound. the overall aesthetic feels DIY and personal. The production sounds like something you could hear at a live concert keeping true to the bands foundational motivations and not getting lost in overdubs and studio effects.

The mix and production are fair good and capture the vintage retro lo-fi sounds that the Quercus Quercus delights in.

Thank you so much for being a part of the psychedelic rock revolution! I am working hard to get new music our to the world. I get lots of great feedback about how people are discovering new bands and finding awesome new music. It takes a lot of work to keep the page going and unfortunately the psychedelic rock genre constellation is not a heavy hitter for the search / click and pay universe but that is not why I am here. I am here to support artists and labels and because I love music a lot.

It can be hard to follow underground rock music and thus I am happy so many of you have reached out to me sharing your band with CDs, Downloads, and Vinyl. I find new music organically through social networks but mostly through my email. So please reach out and let me know about your band. I receive a lot of emails and this is not a paying gig so I need to manage my time wisely and cannot write about everything I hear. That said, if I do not wrte about your band perhaps you just reached me at the wrong time and i encourage you to follow up. Also its super helpful if all the info I would need can all be sent in a single email. The more information I have about your band your music and the story behind the album the easier it is for me to create quality content and make a good review.

If you’d like to help me keep the page going simple come back over and over and click through a bunch of articles and listen to a lot of music. Or if you want to be more supportive you can donate to me at the paypal link below. Any amount helps even $1. Truly the money goes to good cause I primarily use my paypal to pay the fees for the page hosting and domain and to buy records from these incredible bands on the page.
