Population II – À la Ô Terre – Psych Fuzz Rock Vintage World Vibes

Population II À la Ô Terre

8 / 10 Psychedelic Rock World Music Vibes

Population II À la Ô Terre was released on October 30th 2020 on Castle Face Records.

Population II À la Ô Terre is a psychedelic rock album that get plenty weird and far-out. The music is outside of genre definitions but has strong elements of psychedelic rock, garage rock and krautrock with vintage compressed vocals. The music can be mellow or fuzzy driven rock music. The music shifts and changes with free flowing fluidity. The vocals adrift in reverb are raft that rides the music.

The music has a raw in the moment feel and it can change from loud rock and roll to outer-space lounging music to strange lysergic soundtracks. The album is packed with interesting tones and effects. From time warping delay, atmospheric reverb to 8 bit glitch bot and unique exciting fuzz tones. À la Ô Terre has psych rock sounds coming in droves. They tap into occult vibes and dark scenes with vintage organs droning and vocals echoing heard in the track ‘La Offrande’.

Population II À la Ô Terre was released on Castle Face Records which is run by John Dwyer of Osees. It is no surprise he pick up on Population II as they have an experimental motivation that Osees shares. The music is a kin to the psych rock of King Gizzard, Frankie and The Witch Fingers, Osees, Sunns, and Imajinary Friends.

Population II gets delicously weird on À la Ô Terre and the first time listening through the album there is no knowing what lies ahead. The most striking feature of the album is the bands ability to sound like themselves through so many lenses. The various nodes of sound are all linked together with smooth transitions between songs and sections. Incredible music that ranges from drifting synth with heavy bass to Psychedelic fuzzed out garage rock. The vocals are all in French giving the album the world sound that is so appealing.

‘Les Ventas’ is an instrumental song with vintage organs and dirty lofi fuzz tones that stroll along through a lysergic universe. The opening song ‘Introspection’ gives a heavy dose of Osees style psych rock that kicks hard.

Population II is from Montreal, Québec and they released their first album in 2017. À la Ô Terre is their third full length album and one of their best.
