CAN Live In Stuttgart 1975

CAN Live In Stuttgart 1975 is the lastest release from the archives of CAN. This album features a 90minute live performance that is all instrumental from their post Damo Suzuki period. The live set is comprised of long improvised jams with steady motorik rhythm, jamming guitars, keyboards and charged bass lines. The music is progressive improvised krautrock and is a fine example of what CAN can do when freely performing on stage. The recording quality is very good and each instrument is mixed wonderfully for a great listening experience. The songs build into far-out sections but also ramble in mid tempo strolls.

CAN Live In Stuttgart 1975 was released on a limited edition triple orange LP from Spoon Music and was a surprise that hit the shelves in June. The diehard CAN fans are in love with this release as it features music that is totally improvised and therefore never heard before. One of the most recognizable aspects of CAN is their singer Damo Suzuki. He is not on this album at all as this is from after he left the band. The same spirit remains but with a stronger progressive tint. Damo added a lot of energy to the free flowing performances but on this the enegy comes from the drummer. The drums are tight and continuously driving the songs forward, in fact second to the vocals the drumming has likely had the longest standing influence on music from this band. The steady drum beats can be heard in contemporary psychedelic rock and improvised rock music to this day.

CAN Live In Stuttgart 1975 was performed on the tour following Future Days, Soon Over Burma and Landed. This phase of CAN’s career was instrumental long form improvisations and soundtrack like albums. Their spirit of freedom continued on from the first album to the last. CAN is the definitive krautrock band and shaped multiple generations of experimental rock artists.

CAN’s music and the krautrock and space rock movement in music was a product of the times. They are from Germany and released their first album in 1969 known as the summer of love when psychedelics entered into the western consciousness. This psychedelic revolution was important but more important was the break from conservatism and re imagining society in a revolutionary way. World War 2 had ended 24 years earlier and Germany was still in shock and politically divided. Some of the supporters of the authoritarian state sanctioned murders and conquest were parents, grandparents, and friends. The youth was looking for a way to express the grief, chaos and desire for change. The experimental improvisational psychedelic music movement that became known as krautrock was a total shattering of the musical molds. Their music was an expression of social change and philosophical transformation. Their improvisational approach was not new but was heard primarily in US jazz music. What was new was the orientation toward rock music and experimentation with new vocal styles, new technology such as the synthesizer and effects. They also brought in noise, drone and free form music into the fold of their compositions.

CAN Live In Stuttgart 1975 exemplifies how unique their live performances are. The music was all new compositions fully improvised with songs lasting up to 35 minutes. This insight into the live side of CAN is exceptional. The sound is great and the bands performance is inspired. There is a lot of open ended jamming which can feel a bit loose yet the drums hold it all together and the tracks build slowly and reach stirring climaxes.
