We’re Gonna Miss You 13th Floor Elevator Tribute Various Artists

We’re Gonna Miss You 13th Floor Elevator Tribute by Various Artists is an amazing album with inspired songs and incredible young artists from Australia. The line-up includes Turtle Skull, Rosa Maria, Buried Feather, Misty Lanes and more. The album has retro rock with jangling guitars, reverb and fuzz leads.

We’re Gonna Miss You is one of the best tributes I have heard in years. I am not a fan of tributes because they are not cohesive and usually I like the original recordings too much. Although the original 13th Floor Elevator and Rocky Erickson are the stuff of legend these covers are highly inspired and well done. The band capture the vintage tones and give them a modern edge.

For those who have lived under a rock for the last 70 years The 13th Floor Elevators of Austin, Texas were the first psychedelic rock band. They took garage rock and classic rock and roll to new places largely inspired by their indulgence in psychedelics and other drugs.

Their first album was titled, ‘The Psychedelic Sounds of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators‘ released in 1966. This album became a classic that is repressed and played to this day. The bands music held up over time and whole genres of music have been inspired by them.

The 13th Floor Elevators were classic young outlaws. They lived by their own rules and made music their own way. Tommy Hall was the psychedelic guru on electric jug and Rocky Erickson and Stacy Sutherland were the musician genius. The band was into psychedelic before the rest of the world became aware of them and use to hand out LSD to the audience before shows. Keep in-mind that this is a time before the drug was illegal.

The police in Texas were investigating illegal activities of the band and they were always searching and damaging their equipment. Band members were arrested on several occasions and the band ended when Rocky Erickson was detained and placed in an insane asylum.

Rocky Erickson underwent electro-shock therapy and heavy medication. This happened because the courts believed that he was insane from using cannabis and LSD. He was eventually freed once his brother and mother took custody but he was never the same.

Rocky overcame many obstacles and had a very successful solo music career and toured as the 13th Floor Elevators in the 2000s. Rocky Erickson passed away May 31st 2019.

Pseudo Mind Hive does an awesome version of ‘Two Headed Dog’ that pulses with electric energy. Buried Feather does a heavy buzz saw psych version of ‘Earthquake’ that will make your brain shake. The Flamingo Jones plays ‘(I’ve Got) Levitation’ and it is groovey the bending guitar leads and tones are blissful retro psychedelic rock.

We’re Gonna Miss You is packed with amazing bands from Australia show casing the next generation of psychedelic rock artists. The genre is bigger then ever and the future for this music is strong. Thank you Third Eye Stimuli for this awesome tribute.
