Flavor Crystals Five

Flavor Crystals Five drives deep into sonic soundscapes. At times I can imagine being underwater in the waves of sound. The instruments blend together with feedback and harmonics overtones creating immersive music.

Flavor Crystals Five is an epic album packed with beautifully textured guitars. The bass that wraps the sound in a ocean of sustained notes. Josh Richardson‘s voice softly drifts across the icy reverbs and the sun reflects off the crystalline surfaces creating shimmering lights.

Flavor Crystals are from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA and released their first album in 2005 titled ‘On Plastic‘. As you might have guessed Five is the fifth full-length album. This album covers 5 sides of a 12″ LP and is the first release in 5 years. Five is the follow-up to The Shiver Of The Flavor Crystals which was a double LP. Their sound lends itself to long songs and long albums. Their clear slow restrained approach to music has helped them to distinguish themselves.

Flavor Crystals exercise restraint throughout the album using hot distorted tones but rarely for heavy rock instead the guitars bubble and burn of the edge of control verging on harmonic feedback. The overall impact is atmospheric even though on closer examination the guitars are using psychedelic rock tones with echo, reverb, fuzz, and loud hot amps. The effects become complex and layered pointing toward real time pedal setting adjustments. The ends of songs trail off in iridescent moving sound.

The album presents subtly and careful consideration throughout. The music feels meditative in an unconventional way. The sound quality is very good and listening to the LP is much more immersive then the digital files, it seems the vinyl format give the sound more warmth and balance.
