Black Satori – Electric Kiss

Black Satori – Electric Kiss is the latest album from the emerging psych-punk-stoner-garage band from the USA Black Satori. Electric Kiss is a 7″ vinyl in packaging designed by the band. The A side is Electric Kiss a fuzzed out reverberating psychedelic rock song with Jimi Hendrix vibes and big guitar tones. the B side is 3 Minutes an edgy punk song with dark undertones and driving bass lines and drumming. This is the first release since its 2021 album Lucy Lane which was self-released on streaming and CD. Electric Kiss is the bands first release from Echodelick Records and the first vinyl pressing.

Black Satori – Electric Kiss is an exciting release the mastering by Arlen Thompson (Anunnaki, Wolf Parade) takes it to a level of quality on the vinyl press that sounds so much better than the digital version.

Black Satori is my band and as such I am going to deviate from a regular review and instead discuss the creation of these songs and the history of Black Satori.

Black Satori started in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2018 and now is partially located in San Francisco. Guitarist Joseph Holbrook started the band as a project for a course in audio recording and engineering. His longtime collaborator Michael Stubbe was recruited for drums and vocals. Nathan Rose joined the party on guitar and vocals after responding to a Craigslist ad following the departure from his band Cosmic Dream. Later the talented Alex Lode, who is a skilled guitarist, joined the band on bass. Black Satori set out to make psychedelic rock music that combined all the various branches of the contemporary rock and classic psychedelic rock genres. They all connected with a love of bands like Black Angels, Pink Floyd, King Gizzard, and various heavy metal music.

The band quickly hit the stage with their original music and opened for bands like Acid Mothers Temple, The Well, and Acid Dad. They released their first singles in 2019 on limited CD-R followed by Black Satori Live at the 7th St Entry which quickly sold out. They became known for their ability to perform on stage with the ethos of responding to the energy of the audience and leaving space for improvisation for inspired live performances.

Their first studio album Lucy Lane was released in 2020 and featured energized psychedelic rock with classic blues, punk, surf and experimental krautrock. This album features their first single and music video for ‘Listless’ a surfy song with open skies reverb, soaring guitar solos and California vocals. The opener ‘Another Dimension’ is an 8-minute song with a krautrock backend and punk verse chorus opening. The album was well received especially in Europe and hit the airways on underground radio and podcasts.

Black Satori – Electric Kiss is a song that I have carried with me over the years. I wrote it in 2015 after spending several days learning to play Jimi Hendrix‘s Voodoo Child. The garage rock feel was something I was interested blending with a loose rock and roll blues sound. I am a visual songwriter and this was a love scene for me of meeting someone special kissing and feeling compelled to see them again. Originally the song was developed on the acoustic guitar then later I worked out an electric arrangement that I played with my band Cosmic Dream and as a solo performer. This was the song that really drew Joe Holbrook‘s attention when I emailed him about starting a band. For a few years I thought of Electric Kiss as a song from my past that was complete but never found its full potential. Black Satori usually writes more as a group bringing together riffs and sections of songs and bringing everything together through improvisations and long jamming rehearsals. When Black Satori got a hold of the songs it really opened up and felt right.

3 Minutes‘ started from the concept that we needed some shorter songs to squeeze in at the end of live sets. We decided ‘lets make a songs that is 3 minutes long’. This is how 3 minutes was born. We wanted to highlight the awesome bass lines and play with wild effects. I had been writing in journals ranting about politics. I was skimming through those pages pulled out some key words and phrases. I visualized a cityscape torn and ominous with futuristic drone police and repressive apocalyptic feelings. I build the lyrics to reflect the politics of the time and to lean into a dark and sinister future world that the current political and environmental climate will lead to. The song is unique for Black Satori and went through many revisions before being complete. In the end the song was 3 minutes and 20 seconds but we were proud to create a song that was less than 6 minutes long.
