Taras Bulbas – Sometimes The Night
Taras Bulbas – Sometimes The Night was inspired by horror movies and features the most traditional music to date from the band. On past albums the music has been wonderfully experimental pushing boundaries and exploring new terrain. This album continues the quest for new creative modes of expression with organs, guitars, drums, vocals, saxophone and bass. The melodies are vintage and give a retro film score feel but with plenty of rocking undertones and groove oriented riffage. Its a tasty slice of fuzzy rock that plays like a highlight reel of 8mm film.
Taras Bulbas features former members of Earthling Society with Fred Laird leading the charge. This album was home recorded during the pandemic and the majority of the instruments were all recorded and performed by Laird with guest musicians Daisy Atkinson on vocals and Mike Blatchford on saxophone. Sometimes The Night is the fourth album from Taras Bulba and is the follow-up to Three Gate Dub and the excellent album Soul Weaver.
Taras Bulbas – Sometimes The Night continues their legacy of making music for the avant-garde. They stay true to krautrock inspirations and a psychedelic aesthetic. Sometimes The Night is mind bending the layers of instrumentation, field Recordings and instrumental loops take the listener on a journey. The music is like a work of art intended to be be absorbed and to challenge assumptions and expectations. The music is highly inspired by films from David Lynch, Noir Crime genre, Jean Cocteau and the works of Yukio Mishima. It draws on the old school soundtrack and guitar instrumentals of the 60s and early 70s with artists like Link Wray. This is sprinkled in with inspirations from Hasil Askins, The Cramps, Gallon Drunk Bohren and Der Club of Gore and more.
Taras Bulbas – Sometimes The Night satisfies the craving for a wild underground creative musical experience with heady peaks and mellow flowing valleys. The bouncing between classical instruments and effected drone and noise is well done and unique. The overall sound is very good with a warm vintage feel. The concept and general aesthetic of the album is wonderful and unique much like the films that inspired it. It is meditative while being a challenging work of art and accomplishes all that it set out to do namely blending new musical forms with art-house soundtrack qualities. Fred Laird has a seemingly endless musical horizon and every album from him is impressive and innovative. This music will thrill anyone in the psych scene who enjoys music that finds its own direction and forges its own pathway through the genre.
