Mdou Moctar Afrique Victime
Mdou Moctar Afrique Victime is an upbeat rocking album from one of Africa’s most exciting guitarists. The cheerful guitar is laced with sunshine and optimism in each note. The vocals are celebratory in tone with sections of group singing. The album is a style of music known as Tuareg which blends African rhythm and traditional songs of Niger and the Saharan desert region with garage rock, blues and reggae.
Mdou Moctar has been called the “Jimi Hendrix” of desert blues. He plays many traditional songs hear throughout the Tuareg music but brings an expressive blues style. He uses more effects pedals then his contemporaries and plays the guitar with feeling. The music is often improvised during the instrumental sections giving the album the excitement of a live room performance.
The band chimes in on vocals and the entire production feels intimate. Often the percussion is a combination of hand drumming, claps, string slaps, and desert blues drum kits. The music is filled with heart that vibrates inside each phrase.
A few of the songs use Acoustic guitars that are fingerpicked with simple chords that are ornamented with fast hammer-ons and single note runs. The sound of the guitar is complex yet is controlled and soothing to the ear.
This albums embodies the spirit of hope and the feeling of sunshine. The music comes from a place of deep meaning and many of the traditional songs are about friendship, family and community. The sound is forward looking and has Mdou Moctar as one of the best guitarists to emerge on the world stage.
Mdou Moctar has been releasing albums since 2013 and has tracked the world performing his music touring the USA and Europe extensively. Each album has shown progress in his playing style band and aesthetic. Each album highlights a different shade of Moctar’s style. His previous album Illana The Creator was focused on extended and highly energized guitar solos with a stronger use of effects like phaser and echo. This style can heard in its most psychedelic form at the end of the song ‘Afrique Victime’.
Afrique Victime is the first from Matador Records which marks a major turning point for the bands success. It solidifies his presence in the USA and grants wider marketing and distribution. The album is excellent and will bring delight to your speakers for yers to come. Mdou Moctar brings his skill and energy to the album and continues to explore new directions for the Taureg music style.
