Anthroprophh – German Oak
Anthroprophh – German Oak is a mind fuck freakout! Side A is a 17 minute meltdown with wailing experimental wah-wah guitar leads and cascading drums and bass. This heavy psychedelic rock and free form Acid Mother Temple styled freakout then breaksdown into minimalist cosmic soundscapes that drift across the rest of the album. German Oak grabs the listener and guides them through unexpected soundscapes. I recommend buying the ticket and taking the ride and absorb its intensity and then laying out to melt into the vast expanse.
Anthroprophh – German Oak cuts into heavy psych experiments that flirt with noise rock. They make a strong showing with these improvisational songs. The opener ‘German Oak’ runs for 17 minutes and goes from all out on fire freaks-ville to Mellotron flutes across a vast expanse. The blend of heavy psych and vintage kosmische is very good. The dynamic composition travels a winding pathway through the mountains.
The second side of the LP drifts into kosmische soundscapes. Low tones of humming snyth and droning voices build a vintage style cosmic abstract space. Then on ‘Wandlied’ they slip into Eastern inspired acoustic guitar in the American Primitive style something like Robbie Basho or Elk Horn for a modern example.
German Oak is an album that has a lot to give. Shifting from mellow soundscapes, to vintage kosmische to acoustic guitars in eastern modes to all out meltdown freak-out with blazing experimental guitar. Anthroprophh does all of it very well and has compiled a unique blend of music that touches on many of my favorite varieties of psych music. This album helps to define how these various styles are intertwined and all have come from a psychedelically inspired musical mind set laid out in the 1960s and evolving up to today.
The album breakdown my expectations as the first track made me expect more ripping guitars. However, the tracsk that followed went in another direction completely and focused on meditative spaces with droning cosmic tones that ring and harmonize in a strange vibrational world. The album grabs the listener and guides them through unexpected soundscapes. I recommend buying the ticket and taking the ride absorbing its intensity and then laying out to melt into the vast expanse.
