The Left Outsides – Are Your Sure I Was There
The Left Outsides – Are Your Sure I Was There is a rock album with folk rock appeal. The female vocals have a rockers edge blended with 1960’s acid folk. The jangling garage rock guitars with melodic bass and simple percussion is a winning combination. The arrangements are built on guitar chords and folk rock arrangements with surprise instrumentation including sitar, violin, organs and more.
The Left Outsides – Are Your Sure I Was There has beautiful folk based music with clear vocals, classical harmonies and drudging melancholic style that is a signature of Alison Cotton. Here voice is beautiful on the album and she brings her unique vocal arrangements with layered open harmonies. The vocal style is vintage toned and reminds me of the acid folk of the 1960’s. The inclusion of fuzzed guitars enhances the rock feel of the album.
The two band members have played in several bands and have been apart of many album in a similar style. The sound is refined yet raw and intimate. The quality of the recording is good with wonderful mix and master which i am sure sounds stunning on vinyl.
The songs have classic melodies and draws inspiration from the full legacy of acid folk from the 1960, 70s and 2000s. ‘November on My Mind’ has a classic 1960s folk rock sound that could have been written for a 60’s sunshine pop piece. Where as ‘Stone Barn’ is country folk with an Irish inspired viola part, simple chords and melodic longing vocals. he balance between the folk rock and traditional folk sound is the strength of the album. They are traditional folk but also have fuzz rock influences sprinkled in.
The Left Outsides
The Left Outsides released their first EP in 2006. The band features Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas both former members of The Eighteenth Of May. The band is based out of London. Alison Cotton also released a solo album in 2020 titled Only Darkness Now also out on Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records. Are You Sure I Was There is the sixth full-length album from the band.
The highlight of the album is certainly the beautiful simple melodies that reach into emotional places in the soul. The music is inspired and never tiring. The vocals and arrangements are well done and there is nothing to dislike about this wonderful album. The classic charm of the melodies feel ancient and ties the music back to the centuries past but its all done with a focus on making something new and pushing into the unconventional.
