Vinnum Sabbathi Of Dimensions & Theories is heavy stoner rock with chugging guitars, distorted bass lines and dramatic heavy drumming. They incorporate voice-overs with space and sci-fi broadcasts, the music is instrumental.
The music builds to intense climaxes with percussive heavy metal style rock that blends with experimental doom. The album has a sense of doom that pervades it with ominous tones, off kilter vibes and slow building dark melodies. They build the songs slowly before launching into heavy stoner crushing rock. Their tones are distorted even when quite and the sabbath inspired riffage reaches into modern heavy psych.
‘In Search of M-Theory’ is the opening track and it summarizes the sonic territory the rest of the album excavates. With a smooth foreboding introduction radio voice overs with sci-fi and psychedelic reality questioning themes and a neck breaking climax.
The album is sci-fi themed through out the packaging shows a person in a spacesuit examining and space rock with other astronauts. The background of the artwork is several planets and moons showing that Vinnum Sabbathi intend to take the listener far from home. The songs titles are ‘Quantum Determinism’, ‘A Superstring Revolution’ and other science and space titles. They are pushing the space rock persona with every inch of the album.
The space theme questions our current models of reality and speaks to the destructive dangers of weapons. The narration speaks of a journey to space to save the human race from total annihilation. With such heavy ideas in the music it is no wonder that they are slamming heavy on these tracks.
At one point the album states, “Humanity is fucked and we are all going to die. Even if we manage to escape the Earth the Universe will die anyway.” They do not hold back on their feelings about where humanity is headed or where we are. In this way the album plays very much like a film with the voice overs providing the narrative.
Vinnum Sabbathi
Vinnum Sabbathi is a sci-fi heavy psychedelic stoner rock band from Mexico City. It is a five piece band that released their first demos in 2012. After a series of EPs singles and splits in 2017 they release their first full length album. Of Dimensions and Theories is their second full length release. The split releases with Comacozer, Cegvera, and Bar De Monjas were all well received and the limited vinyl are circulating at high prices online. The limited editions of this new album sold out quickly and reissues are being planned.
Vinnum Sabbathi Of Dimensions & Theories is about the destruction of humanity and their feeble attempts to be saved by a last mission into space to save the species. With such heavy themes its no surprise that the music hits so hard. The melodic introductions to the songs are more mellow and create a sense of unease. They take this tension and throw it into the maelstrom building up intensity to a point of near chaos.
The guitar tones are rich and dirty and the bass sound is a big highlight with loud end punch and beautifully texted distortion. The bass keep the music moving with melodic lines and percussive punch. The drummer hits hard but know how to build and sit back in the mix when needed. He starts hitting harder as the band creates greater intensity. The guitars stick to chugging riffs and do little with the way of guitar solos or leads. They focus on ripping awesome tones and layers of overdrive and fuzz.
