Future Wizards The Complete Wicker Hymns is acid folk with acoustic guitars, mysterious vocals, droning organs and over an hour of music. The music has vintage psychedelic folk vibes that are very satisfying.
The Complete Wicker Hymns was inspired by the 1973 film the pagan horror classic ‘The Wicker Man’. The music feels like it comes from the fantasy world that the film created with it’s folk, psychedelic and dark scenes.
This album will appeal to fans of Espers, Winter Flowers, Silver Summit, Fern Knight, The Pentangle, and the acoustic and mysterious side of Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Incredible String Band.
Future Wizards The Complete Wicker Hymns is 4 EPs combined. The themes of folksey magic and pagan ritual fill the album cover to cover. The strummed and picked acoustic guitar is beautifully played. The electric guitar laying down retro rock rock guitar solos is right out of the 1960’s acid folk movement. Much of the music has the feel of a film score with extended sections of soundscapes.
The guitars are both electric and acoustic. The two interweave and create acid folk vibrations. The acoustic is either finger picked or strummed often with a lead guitar melody over the top. The electric guitar tones are lightly overdriven with a warm orange tone. They capture the beauty of the acid folk music of the 60s and 70s and the acid folk movement of the early 2000s.
The albums feature diverse instrumentation with drum kits, hand drumming, and other percussion instruments along with bass, guitars, organs, and other droning instruments. The compositions are well formed and leave space for interesting departures from the main themes of the song. The instruments blend together perfectly and make for a magical pagan ritual.
The music truly sounds like it could a soundtrack for a lost 1970s art house film. The compositions vary in length some short and others extending for as long as 20 minutes. They get into far reaching psychedelic folk jams with the electric guitar reaching into the clear night sky.
Ceremony and ritual are themes in the sound of the album and Future Wizards and Opel have an uncanny ability to bring the scene of inspiration out in their music. It feel likes music that could be at a Pagan festival with fire spinning gypsy’s, bon fires and secret ceremonies in the night with a distinctive psychedelic feeling. The undertones are mysterious and unsettling as through something unsightly could happen at any time.
Future Wizards The Complete Wicker Hymns is a great album with a timeless feeling that is traditional, psychedelic. It hits that vintage 1960’s acid folk rock sound which is so rarely heard on albums today.
