The Oscillation ‘Dilated Mind’
The Oscillation ‘Dilated Mind’ is a psychedelic rock song with a lengthy space age synth drone the explodes into ripping fuzz guitar and vocals. The song is saturated in reverbs and echo effects that build and swirl in the background. Classic kraut rock is infused into the DNA of ‘Dialated Mind’ from the kraut kosmische droning intro to the steady psychedelic experimental rock that follows.
The band locks into a motorik beat and the bass punches through with a steady groove. The rhythm players keep a steady beat that and tap into the feel of electronic beats created by their interaction. The groove allows the other instruments to freely jam and experiment.
The guitar players step out onto the edge with their outstanding performance on ‘Dilated Mind’. They go in psychedelic space rock freak out guitar with layers of effects for otherworldly sounds. The guitar moves seamlessly into high energy guitar solos the rip into the mix. The electric guitar has dense distortion, echo, wah, tremolo deep sting bends and vibrato for sustained tone that is raw and full.
‘Dilated Mind’ also features synthesizer which sounds modular with stretched drones and breathing tones. The introduction and feature resonating synth and droning tones with no percussion, bass or vocals. The Oscillation is a proponent of drone music and the modular synth is the ultimate drone instrument. The droning sections feel central the the music and give more dynamic and variety.
The synth is ever present during the psychedelic rock explosion section of the song. It creates a backdrop for the music to sit upon with oscillators humming and modular units shaping the sound. The constant movement helps the guitar to reach into the beyond. This intense droning foundation requires a strong rhythm to keep the time. It also adds to the far-out guitar arrangements as it adds movement and harmonic value to the experimental use of effects on display.
The vocals are deeply layered and altered with effects. If most vocals are in a room where the sound reverberated off the walls to create atmosphere then this album takes place in a gravity free chamber on mars. The vocals are deeply saturated in reverb and echo the has significant sustain causing the sound of the voice to echo on and trail for several seconds or more. This is done with great skill as they still come through the mix and the constant background reflections of the voice melt into the droning synth.
This album is very cool and I give it my stamp of approval.
The Oscillation
The Oscillation formed in 2006 and released their first album in 2007 titled Out of Phase. Their most recent offering is the full length DroneWeapon. The Oscillation is from London, England and have been a long time inspiration for the hundreds of spaced out psychedelic and shoegaze bands in London.
They have collaborated with many record labels starting with D.C. Recordings, the All Time Low, Cardinal Fuzz, Fuzz Club Records and Self Releasing. Cardinal Fuzz is a psychedelic rock, kraut rock record label that releases amazing psych rock music. Fuzz Club also has a deep line up of psychedelic, shoegaze and heavy psych bands. Their recent move to self release music has taken place in 2020 and while knowing nothing about why they made this choice I assume it is due to Covid-19.
2020 has been a year of many challenges and changes. The flow of people into new ideas and the breaking down and reevaluation of old structures has been harrowing. With in the tragic year has been many album of underground rock music that have been very good. The Oscillation is certainly one of the bands that has been helping me understand the crazy times that we are in.
