Holy Wave Interloper
8.5 / 10
Holy Wave Interloper released on July 3rd 2020 from Reverberation Appreciation Society!
Holy Wave Interloper is multidimensional music with synth and keyboard driven psychedelic indie dream rock with Shoegaze and surf rock styling. The soothing atmosphere is like a day at the beach with spaced out chill sounds that become more driven and complex as the album progresses.
This album also gets experimental, the production has soaring synth and layered arrangements that take this album to the next level. The Hi-Fi synth sounds are contrasted by vintage organs and vintage guitar tones with old school tape delay and reverb effects.
The vocals on Interloper have catchy melodies and highly effected vocals making for a futurist tone and adding popular music influence. The juxtaposition between the rich arrangements and the stretched melodic vocals creates songs which are upbeat and enjoyable but on closer observation the music has many subtleties that emerge after multiple listens. What a great album.
The sound quality is wonderful the mix is beautiful and the overall packaging and production are all excellent. Holy wave Interloper is the album you do not want to sleep on head over to Reverberation Appreciation Society and get the limited edition splatter vinyl unless its already to late!
Holy Wave is from Austin, Texas USA a hot bed for great music and the city where psychedelic rock started with the 13th Floor Elevators. Holy Wave released their first album Relax in 2014 and it had a great reception for an underground and unknown band. Freak of Nature was released in 2016 and Adult Fear in 2018. On Adult Fear their sound moved toward use of keyboards and synth for the arrangements of the songs where as Relax featured guitar based compositions with a contemporary California surf feel. Holy Wave features Dustin Zozaya, Joey Cook, Julian Ruiz, Kyle Hager, and Ryan Fuson.
Interloper features further development and refinement of their brilliant songwriting and arranging. The songs are moving in the direction of Tame Impala‘s early albums and edging toward popular music with experimental vision. The album washes over the ears with complex lust arrangements which stay beautiful and interesting. Other bands that come to mind listening to the album are Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Tame Impala, Sonic Boom, Animal Collective, and it has that emerging electronic psychrock sound that is strong in LA.
