Liminanas Shadow People
Liminanas released Shadow People an excellent new Full Length from Lionel and Marie Liminana from Southern France on the label Because Music. This band has motorik rhythms and garage rock inspire psychedelic pop music. The Liminanas are able to expertly craft songs each distinct from the last. With-in the diversity of sounds they maintain a coherence that is recognizable throughout. I would compare the Liminanas to Moon Duo, Brain Jonestown Massacre, Allah-Las, L.A. Witch, Wooden Shjips, Ty Segall, White Denim. Anthony Newcombe makes a guest appearance as a vocalist and mixed the album.
“Shadow People” is the title track and a highlight from the album with psychedelic pop appeal and Beatles esq. back up vocals. The swirling vintage organ tones and the harmonic vocals repeat the chorus “I’m twisting the Shadow people”. The next song “Dimanche” has spoken French male voice over and a driving dark no wave sound. The Liminanas know how to use the spoken word in their music, reminding us that the French language is very appealing to listen to. “The Gift” is next on the tracklist and has female vocals in English with 80’s styled keyboard sounds bring the sound back to some of the best moments of 80’s no-wave pop. The organs build and swirl sculpting melodic emotional tension that is lyrically expressed as longing. Marie Liminana sings, “I am waiting for you, I look to the East and see this is a gift.. I write it alone without you. Oh no no no.”
Liminanas Shadow People is a superb album! It should be in every psych collection! Highly recommended! Very excited for their next release album I’ve Got Trouble In Mind Vol. 2 – 7″ and rare stuff 2015 / 2018.
