Dead Meadow The Nothing They Need
8 out of 10
Dead Meadow The Nothing They Need is their latest album celebrating 20 years as a band. The Nothing They Need is the 8th full-length album and the first release in over 5 years. Dead Meadow is one of the premier stoner rock and psychedelic rock bands in the world.
Their verse chorus song structures are filled with downer disinterested vocals and exciting fuzzy wah guitar solos. The Nothing They Need packs in plenty of juicy fuzz solos with a shifting spectrum of guitar tones. The songs also have shifting performers giving each song an unique arrangement highlighting the skilled players who have been apart of this bands epic journey. On this latest album they brought together all of the musicians who have been apart of the band’s history into the studio to make guest appearances on the album.
Dead Meadow’s The Nothing They Need displays their melancholic vocals backed by tight rhythm and guitar. Each song has at least one guitar solo which the fans anticipate with bated breath. The end of the album takes on longer instrumental passages with droning tones which stretch into soundscapes. It spirals out removing the instruments until only a swirling infinitely repeating echo remains.
The album as a whole is very strong, highly creative, well-recorded and produced, with a number of very exciting climatic moments. The mellow vibes at the end of the album is very pleasurable and is a highlight. It receives an 8 out of 10 because of the strict adherence to a downer vibe and lack of extended improvisational guitar acrobatics which saturate their live performances. Don’t let numbers fool you this album rocks!!
