Perhaps 4

Perhaps is experimental rock with psychedelic radiations that can melt minds. Crossing freely between rock, jazz, noise, krautrock, space rock and art rock. The music is designed to transport the listener to unique musical spheres. ‘4’ transmits cosmic vibrations that envelope the listener pushing boundaries and opening secret doorways. The vocals throughout are both spoken and sung and the production uses effects the reverb, echo, glitch and trail in technicolor auras. There is a frantic energy in the sound that drives forward unrelentingly in a flurry of space rock jazz.

Jim Haney is the project leader and he described ‘4’ as follows: “4 is a huge album and is one of the most layered albums that we’ve done. There were about 15 musicians involved and everyone approached it from a different angle. It was a huge experiment and I’m really happy with how it turned out. It is the really “over the top” record that I’ve always wanted to make. I don’t think we will ever be able to make something more intense and layered than 4.

4 is one 40 minutes song split between the A and the B side of the pink vinyl. Originally released in October of 2016 with a limited edition of 50 cassettes world-wide. Only now is it getting a larger release thanks to Echodelick Records.

Perhaps released their first album in 2012 starting with Volume One, then Volume Two in 2013, Third in 2015, and the limited release of 4. These were all self-released and during that time Jim Haney and his collective of musicians known as Perhaps performed and found an audience is the psychedelic stoner and space rock scene. Their album V was released by Riot Season Records in the UK bringing more attention to the band throughout the underground.

Perhaps explores space rock with no boundaries. The band has 15 musicians creating a woven tapestry of sound. The album is highly original and drives forward evolving and spiraling through various sections while keeping a continuous line. Instruments enter and exit freely including guitars, bass, drums, vibraphone, saxophone, flutes, vocals, piano, wild effects and so much more. The repeating vocals give a sense of surreal madness and hallucinations with trailing echoes and glitched out effects.

The album sounds futuristic like an experimental project formed on a space station headed to mars. 4 has a constant tension and straining feeling of anxiousness, the layers of instruments makes the sonic space complex filling every part of the audible music spectrum. The mix is warm and inviting, the glitched out part and high note sax runs are never sharp. The effects are used thoughtfully while still pushing boundaries. The sound of the album is built on many clean instruments laying down a deep field of sound paired with fuzzy guitars and electronic synth. The ear can focus on any given instrument but not on all of them at once. There is so much happening that each listen could revel new experiences. 4 by Perhaps is like a rock and roll orchestra playing psychedelic space rock with acid and free jazz influences.
