8.9 / 10 Finally A Great Live King Gizz Album

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16 was released on November 20th 2020 on Flightless Records in deluxe and eco-wax vinyl versions.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16 is the best live album ever from King Gizz with high quality sound and tight performances. 2016 was the year King Gizzard entered the awareness of many music lovers due to their legendary live performances. The band was working harder then ever before to get their music out to the world. Their live sets were the tightest they have ever been with hairpin turns and extraordinary precision for a live show.

The sound on Live In San Francisco ’16 is excellent it sounds like they had both the board track by track mix and some open air mics in the venue. The overall mix is very good with tight punchy drum and bass clear guitars and great vocals. Normally the drums get washy the bass gets muddy and the sound of the venue creates a wall of sound feel but not on this album each instrument is clear and balanced. King Gizzard performed with razor sharp precision in San Francisco 2016 making for a great live recording.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16 has the old school King Gizzard garage rock psychedelic freaky weirdness at its best. the album has the songs ‘Gamma Knife’, ‘I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’ and ‘Evil Death Roll’. They play music from ‘Nonagon Infinity’ (2016), I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’ (2014), ‘Float Along Fill Your Lungs’ (2013), Paper Mâché Dream Balloon (2015), and even a track from Quarters!. Perhaps a set with all music from before their break out year is just for the old school fan but I think the album works great as a introduction to or a compilation of the best of the early King Gizzard.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16

King Gizzard and The Lizard wizard have been releasing music since 2012. Hailing from Australia it was essential that a band this talented hit the raod and deliver their music to the world stage. 2016 was the break out year where they had the tightest live sets which were completely choreographed allowing for precise and outstanding live sets every night. On later tours they would ahve a list of over 50 songs to pick and choose for unqiue set lists each night. The 2016 world tour is in direct contrast to this later approach with the same set each night.

I personally saw King Gizzard on the 2016 tour at the Desert Daze music festival and they were the talk of the town. The high energy performance, break neck transitions, wild stage presence with vintage guitars and a large band caught my attention. The ripple effect from this tour was the catalyst for 2017 the year that they released 5 studio albums and everyone was great.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16 captures the most important make or break tour of their career and it shows they were well equipped for the challenge. The band itself admits that the 2016 tour was hardwork but their tightest and most solid live sets. I love to old school king gizzard garge rock psych folk sound and thi album is a delight for me and brings me back to the times when King Gizzard was a name no one knew and everyone laughed at. Think about it you say to your musically enlightened friend there is a band from Australia that is so cool and weird and amazing they are called King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Turnout this band is the real deal a sort of new Led Zeppelin and the 2016 tour will likely stand as being the most important and unrepeatable tour of their career.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – Live In San Francisco ’16 is the album you need. Buy it and get teh deluxe because as people catch on to how great this recording is it will become more highly sought out.
