Bombino Deran
Bombino’s newest album “Deran” is filled with incredible musicianship in a style which fuses Tuareg music of Niger with Reggae and Rock. Energized and inspired live performances have reviewers calling Bombino “One of the best guitarists in the world”. His skill is on full display on Duran. This is the best album yet from this globally recognized band. Bombino’s unique voice striding gleefully with multi-lingual lyricism. In this music, Bombino is preserving his people’s language and bringing it across the globe with gusto.
The band assembled for Deran is spectacular. The drums and bass are flawless and infectious and will have your hips and shoulders bouncing. The bass melodies and rhythms become rooted inside the brain keeping the groove going well after the album has ended. The two guitarists play off one another supporting beautiful lead lines and tight reggae rhythms. The rhythm guitars barrow from reggae but is not typical of the reggae style. The vocals are filled with joy backed and harmonized by the band inviting the listener to join in.

The albums lyrics are sung in the languages of Tuareg and French and are translated on the inner sleeve. The songs use traditional lyrics from Niger and at other times short poems. Deran has song titles such as Deran Deran Alkheir (Best Wishes), Tehigren (The Trees), Midiwan (My Friends). The lyrics of Midiwan translate as: My dear friends I urge you to better guidance. Help me, help me from the bottom of my heart. Help me from the bottom of my heart. Wherever I go I always think of you, my friends!” These lyrics are from a traditional Tuareg song.
Bombino also was known as Omara Moctar and Goumour Almoctar. He is a genius guitar player who was born in the nomadic Tuareg peoples in Nigeria. This was during a long period of political upheaval during which music was made illegal by penalty of death. Bombino and his family fled Niger in 1990 to Algeria. In 2004 he released his first album Agamgam featuring fast fingerpicked acoustic guitar blending the music of niger and the rock music of the west. This new style has become known as Tua-reggae. Dan Arubach of the Black Keys took notice and produced the 2013 release Nomad. Nomad was a clear step toward a louder electric guitar sound which evolves in Azel and most recently in Deran.
